Lisa is very happy with her Nikon D50 single lens reflex thingy. I don't know much about cameras but it came recommended. ~$500 through amazon. (please, please buy it through my amazon link at lmergner.blogspot.com so I can get 4% of the sale!).
My mom just purchased a Canon EOS Rebel XTi. When she asked the guy at the Ritz Camera shop between the Nikon D40 and the XTi the guy said for moving subjects go with the Canon. She loves it. She takes it with her wherever we go and now she takes 100's of pictures of me. I guess I don't mind 'cause now the pictures turn out nice even when I'm running at top speed.
Gandma Melissa and I have a Canon Digital rebel XT(dslr), that is what we used to take the pictures of the puppies. It works great and the pictures are amazing, you can not capture the action shots without using a DSLR. The downside is the size and the seperate lenses. You can get our version 8.0MP for under $500 at Circuit City, they also sell 10mp and 12mp for more $$'s. You need a camera asap, so you can send us some pictures.
